New Hampshire Primary: Wake-Up Call or Last Call?

Should Trump's lead hold, says Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire poll, Trump will become the first candidate – aside from sitting presidents – to win both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. "We're so far past the days when voters nationally were really just waking up" to the campaign debates in the early weeks of a presidential election year, says Dante Scala, a University of New Hampshire professor and author of the book "Stormy Weather: The New Hampshire Primary and Presidential Politics." New Hampshire GOP voters, however, are a different breed of Republicans, Smith says, focusing more on fiscal conservatism and small government. Haley has 36% support and DeSantis 6% backing among primary voters. Trump seems to think so, too: He has focused much of his vitriol in the waning days of the New Hampshire campaign on Haley.

For an incumbent president, primary races -- the state-by-state competitions that nominate a political party's official presidential candidate -- are normally a perfunctory affair. Pro-Biden Democrats' volunteer-focused effort, with just a $100,000 budget, will encourage primary voters to put Biden's name on the New Hampshire ballot. Lyndon B. Johnson, then the Democratic incumbent, shunned the New Hampshire primary in 1968 due to over-confidence, only to see an insurgent campaign from Minnesota, U.S. Biden write-in organizers have largely settled on asking voters to write in "Joe Biden," but believe that other names like "President Biden" and "President Biden and Vice President Harris" satisfy a state law that says to count the vote if the reasonable intent of the voter is clear. "They're gonna use this as a way to say, look, we are good Democrats and organized this to protect President Biden," Smith said.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A group of residents have sued a public utility company in the U.S. Virgin Islands after authorities there reported finding high levels of lead and copper in the tap water on St. Croix. He said the agency acted swiftly and transparently after the test results became available and that officials are still working to improve water quality in St. Croix. “What people are looking for is justice.”The investigation into the state of tap water in St. Croix began in late September, following complaints of reddish-brown water on the island of more than 50,600 people. In late October, the local government announced that officials found high levels of lead and copper and warned people not to drink their tap water. She also criticized the government for announcing a couple of weeks ago that lead levels were low or undetectable at samples taken from various schools across St. Croix.

On the Caribbean island of St. Croix, officials avoided some of those pitfalls and quickly told residents of the results. For lead testing, workers usually take water from a household faucet. It is some of these tests that first recorded astronomically high lead levels. Instead, it's brass fittings that contain lead and can corrode into the water, Smith said.

A Left Turn for Democrats in New Hampshire?
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( Louis Jacobson | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +8 min
Since their narrow victories in 2016, Democrats have won every federal race in New Hampshire – and have done so by widening margins. But Sununu, the scion of a New Hampshire Republican dynasty, decided not to run for a new term in 2024. Depending on vacancies and special elections, the Democrats might be able to flip control of the chamber even before the 2024 election. Under Biden, Democrats changed the order of their primaries to place New Hampshire tied for second, rather than first. Regardless, the unusual nature of the 2024 primary could have negative consequences for Democrats, Galdieri said.

And while Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that the central bank's staff does not predict a recession, he did say that the economy will need to further slow in order to defeat inflation. "We have seen the impact, but not to the extent that the market expected or the Fed expected. He pointed to the iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor ETF (QUAL) and the JPMorgan U.S. Quality Factor ETF (JQUA) as funds that are capturing some of the market rally without adding outsized risk. Those are growth-oriented defensive equities with strong balance sheets, high revenue growth, which is what investors seek during slow revenue or slow economic environments," Smith said. Traders on the floor of the NYSEStock futures were flat on Tuesday evening as investors kept an eye on the federal debt ceiling debate in Washington ahead of the final trading day of May. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures were each little changed. Heading into the final trading day of May, the Nasdaq Composite is up nearly 6.5% for the month. One factor that has weighed on the market in recent weeks is the fight over the debt ceiling. President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced a deal over the weekend to cap federal baseline spending for two years and raise the debt ceiling, but the agreement has not yet been ratified.

The optimism about inflation and the U.S. economy is quickly waning on Wall Street, and the early 2023 rally for stocks is fading. The market was under pressure again on Friday after a hotter-than-expected reading for personal consumption expenditures, sending rates higher and stocks lower. Economic updates Next week brings a new round of economic indicators to see how the sticky inflation is affecting consumers and business. Other looks at the economy will come through key earnings reports. Speech by Fed Governor Christopher Waller Friday: 9:45 a.m. Markit Services PMI 10:00 a.m. ISM Services PMI 3:00 p.m.
At the same time, several online retail stocks have boomed, thanks in part to China abandoning its zero Covid policy. That has created a large gap between some retail ETFs, with broader funds lagging behind those with an e-commerce focus. For example, the Amplify Online Retail ETF (IBUY) and ProShares Online Retail ETF (ONLN) gained 7.7% and 8.1%, respectively in the first five trading days of the year. IBUY YTD mountain Online retail ETFs like IBUY are off to a fast start in 2023. Any reversal there could push retail ETFs that also hold more traditional "brick-and-mortar" stores, back into the lead.
The Dow and S&P 500 have fallen for six straight days, with many of those seeing broad selling typical of so-called "washout" days. That can sometimes be a contrarian buy signal on Wall Street, but many investment professionals are skeptical that the selling is over. One reason is that earnings expectations for next year still show solid growth, which would be unlikely in the event of a recession. "But I have a hard time reconciling in my mind that the earnings story is going to be as good as we expect." Additionally, the dramatic moves in the bond and currency markets means that "something broke" and it may be smart to wait for that information to shake out, Smith said.
